It answers the critical question: Is the machine itself capable of producing within tolerance under ideal conditions?\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"ng-star-inserted\">Does this machine have the technical precision required to meet the tolerance?<\/span><\/p><p class=\"ng-star-inserted\"><span class=\"ng-star-inserted\">\u201cHere is your step\u2011by\u2011step guide to succeeding with the study.<\/span><\/p><h4><span class=\"ng-star-inserted\">Step 1: Preparation (Create ideal conditions)<\/span><\/h4><p class=\"ng-star-inserted\"><span class=\"ng-star-inserted\">The purpose of Cm\/Cmk is to isolate the machine\u2019s performance. Therefore, we want to eliminate as many external sources of disturbance as possible:<\/span><\/p><ul class=\"ng-star-inserted\"><li class=\"ng-star-inserted\"><p class=\"ng-star-inserted\"><strong class=\"ng-star-inserted\"><span class=\"ng-star-inserted\">Material:<\/span><\/strong><span class=\"ng-star-inserted\">\u00a0Use material from the same batch or melt.<\/span><\/p><\/li><li class=\"ng-star-inserted\"><p class=\"ng-star-inserted\"><strong class=\"ng-star-inserted\"><span class=\"ng-star-inserted\">Operator:<\/span><\/strong><span class=\"ng-star-inserted\">\u00a0Use the same operator throughout the entire test. It is important to plan the study together with the relevant stakeholders to ensure alignment.<\/span><\/p><\/li><li class=\"ng-star-inserted\"><p class=\"ng-star-inserted\"><strong class=\"ng-star-inserted\"><span class=\"ng-star-inserted\">Settings:<\/span><\/strong><span class=\"ng-star-inserted\">\u00a0Set the machine to the nominal value (the target value) and make\u2026\u00a0<\/span><strong class=\"ng-star-inserted\"><span class=\"ng-star-inserted\">NO<\/span><\/strong><span class=\"ng-star-inserted\">\u00a0\u2026adjustments during the course of the test.<\/span><\/p><\/li><li class=\"ng-star-inserted\"><p class=\"ng-star-inserted\"><strong class=\"ng-star-inserted\"><span class=\"ng-star-inserted\">Environment<\/span><\/strong><span class=\"ng-star-inserted\">\u00a0Make sure the machine is warmed up and that the conditions are stable.<\/span><\/p><\/li><\/ul><h4><span class=\"ng-star-inserted\">Step 2: Sampling (n=50)<\/span><\/h4><p class=\"ng-star-inserted\"><span class=\"ng-star-inserted\">The standard for a machine capability study is to produce and measure\u2026\u00a0<\/span><strong class=\"ng-star-inserted\"><span class=\"ng-star-inserted\">50 consecutive parts<\/span><\/strong><span class=\"ng-star-inserted\">You can use fewer or more, but try never to go below 25 parts to maintain a sufficient statistical basis.<\/span><\/p><ul class=\"ng-star-inserted\"><li class=\"ng-star-inserted\"><p class=\"ng-star-inserted\"><strong class=\"ng-star-inserted\"><span class=\"ng-star-inserted\">Traceability:<\/span><\/strong><span class=\"ng-star-inserted\">\u00a0Number the parts or arrange them in the order they were produced if you want to be able to analyze trends over time.<\/span><\/p><\/li><li class=\"ng-star-inserted\"><p class=\"ng-star-inserted\"><strong class=\"ng-star-inserted\"><span class=\"ng-star-inserted\">Measurements<\/span><\/strong><span class=\"ng-star-inserted\">\u00a0Measure the parts with a calibrated measuring instrument that has sufficient resolution (preferably 10 times better than the tolerance). If the Cm value is high (e.g., &gt; 1.67), the machine is sufficiently accurate on its own.<\/span><\/p><\/li><li class=\"ng-star-inserted\"><p class=\"ng-star-inserted\"><strong class=\"ng-star-inserted\"><span class=\"ng-star-inserted\">Cmk (Outcome):<\/span><\/strong><span class=\"ng-star-inserted\">\u00a0Shows how well the machine is centered. If Cm is high but Cmk is low, the machine is \u2018shooting off\u2011center\u2019 (the setup is incorrect).<\/span><\/p><\/li><li class=\"ng-star-inserted\"><p class=\"ng-star-inserted\"><strong class=\"ng-star-inserted\"><span class=\"ng-star-inserted\">The normal distribution curve:<\/span><\/strong><span class=\"ng-star-inserted\">\u00a0Look at the shape of the curve. Is it uniform and well\u2011formed? If the bars and the curve do not align, the cause should be investigated immediately.<\/span><\/p><\/li><li class=\"ng-star-inserted\"><p class=\"ng-star-inserted\"><strong class=\"ng-star-inserted\"><span class=\"ng-star-inserted\">Tips:<\/span><\/strong><span class=\"ng-star-inserted\">\u00a0Do you want to compare the results from several flows that produce the same characteristic? Use the function\u2026\u00a0<\/span><strong class=\"ng-star-inserted\"><span class=\"ng-star-inserted\">OVERLAY<\/span><\/strong><span class=\"ng-star-inserted\">\u00a0\u2026in Digicap to overlay the curves.<\/span><\/p><\/li><\/ul><h4><span class=\"ng-star-inserted\">Step 5: Interpretation and Decisions<\/span><\/h4><p class=\"ng-star-inserted\"><span class=\"ng-star-inserted\">In industry (e.g., the automotive industry), the following threshold values for Cm\/Cmk are commonly used:<\/span><\/p><ul class=\"ng-star-inserted\"><li class=\"ng-star-inserted\"><p class=\"ng-star-inserted\"><strong class=\"ng-star-inserted\"><span class=\"ng-star-inserted\">Cmk \u2265 1.67:<\/span><\/strong><span class=\"ng-star-inserted\">\u00a0Approved machine. It is stable and ready for production.<\/span><\/p><\/li><li class=\"ng-star-inserted\"><p class=\"ng-star-inserted\"><strong class=\"ng-star-inserted\"><span class=\"ng-star-inserted\">1.33 \u2264 Cmk &lt; 1.67:<\/span><\/strong><span class=\"ng-star-inserted\">\u00a0Uncertain zone. Often requires more frequent checks or fine\u2011tuning.<\/span><\/p><\/li><li class=\"ng-star-inserted\"><p class=\"ng-star-inserted\"><strong class=\"ng-star-inserted\"><span class=\"ng-star-inserted\">Cmk &lt; 1.33:<\/span><\/strong><span class=\"ng-star-inserted\">\u00a0Rejected. The machine is not stable enough for this tolerance.
